View Full Version : Building an Authority Website - A Newbie Perspective of a Post-Boomer Generation

NAMS had a profound impact on my first venture of building an internet marketing system. I had this long-time dream: to take advantage of the internet opportunities to connect with virtual communities, create and add a targeted sub-community, and find a way to systematize and monetize. The remarkable instructors and students that gathered at NAMS6 and are drawn and committed to collaboration, quality and ethical practice are contributing to realizing that dream. It all came together then when formulating my first Authority or Hub site.

Coming from an era of pre-PC, my fascination with the limitless opportunities never ceased; rather, it has fiercely kindled my learning drive to the point of forcing me to act on my dream. What an opportunity for us “early- or pre-boomers” who have many post-retirement years ahead! Since NAMS5 I have been seriously committed to daily learning tasks, experimenting, writing, … finding my way and my voice. I was so sure I could “brag” at NAMS6 with my first site!! Wrong… all I could do was share my URL with my Tagline: coming very soon. … Now, two months later since NAMS6, my Tagline now reads: very close to launching….

What is taking so long? It is not a lack of great support, assistance, learning tools, etc. And yes, we need to start, ‘just do it,” “take action, revise later…” And all the tech/financial constraints, excuses, hesitations, … every Newbie experiences in one aspect or another, regardless of age. However, the hardest and most difficult stumbling block to overcome, I believe, is a MINDSET shift from what we think, what we know, and our perception as to how things ought to be done, based on our knowledge, experience, and our point of references. To understand the internet marketing mentality, population interests and characteristics, and their voices requires an open mind, a willingness to listen and learn, regardless of how much we think we know. The Mindset shift is more dramatic than we may realize, especially for us older folks, but also a quite enriching process of discovery. Why? That could be another post of interesting discussions.

So, I thought I had done the research, established my target population, a business plan, goals, objectives, and marketing approaches. I felt ready to roll putting the Authority or Hub Site together. But as I began to write the ‘About’ page, it really hit me. When I had to explain myself, my purpose, who do I want to attract, what and how much do I give of myself, my background, my expertise, I realized that I had by far not thoroughly thought through the whole plan. I also was unclear about the characteristics of my target audience, what unique experience I can share, what benefit can I offer, and what would excite my audience. I had to go back to the drawing board, not as the happiest camper though. It was then when I realized that I was stuck in my MINDSET as a former teacher who thought to know more.

NAMS6 brought clarity. Specifically, counsel from Mark Hendricks, David Perdew’s workshop about the power of story telling, Dr. Pauline Wallen’s session finding credible information, and discussions with Bob Jenkins (The Teacher) and Chris Cobb, only to mention a few. I now feel competent enough to state that once any Newbie has mastered the key elements of an Authority Website: the About page and a feature article (well researched with rich content) on the demographics, characteristics and key needs/wants of the target population, the most difficult hurdle and MINDSET shift has been overcome. I could not have done it without NAMS or any other comparable supportive network.

Richard Goutal recently wrote a FB post on 9/17/11 that should encourage anyone starting the journey of building an internet business: "I don't know why but this thought struck me: To shift gears in life and decide to start a business takes no more than turning a canoe- a few deft strokes of a paddle. But to develop a business! That process is more like turning around the Queen Elizabeth II. After all, in a business, you aim to bring a lot of people with you. Of course it takes longer."

Yes, my Authority Website will be on the way shortly and you will be the first ones to know and view it!! My all encouragement to the NAMS Newbies, especially the Senior group. And I would love to hear breakthrough points of others as they take on the new journey.

Hi Ute,
As boomers, we tend to over think things because of all our life experiences trying to avoid the pitfalls we know lie ahead. When we were younger, we would just plow ahead and worry about consequences later. As Internet marketers, we have to get over that--stop worrying about twisting our ankle so to speak.

Write the About page and hit the publish button. You can always revise it and I dare say everyone here has revised their About page at least once. Do I see a show of hands?

So my challenge to you is to post your website URL and let us see the house being built. :)

What a precious lady you are, Ute. I was so excited to meet you and hug your neck at NAMS6 after we'd known each other virtually for some time. You are a wonderful writer! I was totally engaged in your post and could feel your pain.

Although not a boomer, I can relate to what you're saying. The mindset issue doesn't just terrorize seniors. I came from a totally different industry, hanging out with search engine optimizers rather than affiliate marketers. While some may participate in affiliate marketing, none did it at the level NAMS teaches. So, when I was first introduced to NAMS by Lynn Terry in 2010, I was just as raw a newbie to this type of marketing as anyone else who's walked through the doors of a David Perdew event.

And you are right... it takes a shift in mindset to grasp it all. I found that a few of the things people were teaching actually offended me <lol>. They were totally contrary to what I'd learned previously. I was fully convinced they would not work, that these were somehow black hat techniques, etc. Some of it sounded strange and I shook my head quite a bit.

However, once I chose to have an open mind and actually test what I was being taught, I found that there really is more than one way to skin a cat (so to speak). Let me say that, for the most part, I found the teaching of my first NAMS to be enlightening. Only a few of the concepts were strange to me.

I agree with Chris. Write the page(s) and publish them... today would be good :) It doesn't have to be perfect. I doesn't have to stay the way it is now. That's one of the most amazing things about a digital world. EVERYTHING can be changed with the click of a mouse.... including mindsets :)

HUGS!!

Karon

Chris,

Thank you so much!! As always, I could hear your calm, encouraging voice. And, I did it!! I uploaded the About, Welcome, and Article, but not a blog post yet! With some tech. assistance I am pursuing, I will get the site set up so I can manage it alone. Based on your challenge to me, I want to show you the "house being built," but I left the site yet "private and blocked the search engines". I also have more posts ready and almost the Freebie report.

I so appreciate you and your kind, direct support!

Karen,

To you as to Chris, my heart-felt Thank You and Appreciation! I have to say, hearing from you a similar mindset struggle is so encouraging! I would not believe it from having followed you for some time. I also read your book, and was lucky to be in the workshop with you and Chris at the last NAMS. You are so competent in your field and have that internet presence as well. Those of us who are 'hooked' to the NAMS community are so because of members, teachers, colleagues.... like you.
Thus, my gift to you and Chris is to present my raw unfinished work in progress; honestly, I would not have done it yet. But maybe this process and dialogue will encourage other Newbies in a similar mindset struggle and more so, they will sense the power of support.

I will keep you posted on the building progress! And of course, any feedback is always so welcomed. Thank you again,

Ute, the

WooHoo! I'm doing the happy dance for you, Ute!

I have a couple of suggestions you might consider. First is to move the last paragraph on the About page to become the first paragraph. Even though this page is "about" you, your readers are on this page to learn how you can help them. Putting your passion at the top will make that connection.

Then, change your picture size to 120X180. In the editor, click on the picture. You will see two icons. One that edits the picture and one that deletes the picture. Click the editing icon, then click the Advanced tab. Change the dimensions on that page. Then click save.

Oh Chris, Thank you!
I made the changes and the About page is much better. Once I have a handle on the tech stuff and the framework in place with the opt-in, widgets, interlinking, and post, I will have it reviewed to see whether all hangs together. So, some more hurdles to overcome but it should not take that long anymore. You guys pushed me over the edge: I feel like being on a bungee jump I always wanted to try.

Thank you again, the www.FunFitandHealthyGrandma.com

Ute…awesome that you’ve made your blog public to us, your friends and sharing it in this post! I really like what you’ve done so far. It’s absolutely great that you took the plunge and opened it up.

It takes so much courage to put yourself out there. I am so happy for you. As a newbie myself, I too can so painfully relate to how we wait and wait and revise in private to make things so-called perfect. But perfection is like a mirage – the closer you get to it, the further it gets from you.

Take action revise later – I can hear Bob the Teacher inside my head! That’s the ultimate mantra for us.

As for the bungee jump…yesss…let’s make a date of it and DO it! It’ll be quite metaphoric…jumping off the precipice, leap of faith, a new beginning and all that! :)

Thank you Masuda, for all your kind words and thoughts. I know that soon we look back to all this and be the strength for others. And I have to say, it really is getting quite exciting now.

At this point, all I can offer is great encouragement to anyone in this niche marketing building process to NOT give up. And Chris, I am already collecting my tips: 'Had I known what I know now....' and the list is still growing.

Ute, very proud of you for jumping in and getting those pages published. It's so easy to overthink this stuff at first. It used to take me days to write and publish an article or blog post. It does get easier as you become more comfortable with the process and realize that you can always go back and improve things.

Here's something I learned from my friend Nicole Dean. Until you publish it, people can't learn from what you have to share. So get it out there and start helping them, even if your blog post / article/ report / ebook / info product isn't perfect yet.

Thank you so much, Susanne, for your encouragement. I really believe in the process and have confidence that it will come together. I have closely followed you and Nicole for quite some time. All your information and quality content material has always encouraged me. It really came to light at your sessions at NAMS. Your influence has been major and I strive to be able to demonstrate it to you before long. The power of support has been amazing!

My Thank You to the amazing NAMS Team!

Ute - you're on your way. Keep it up. Keep writing and telling stories. You've got a lot to say that a lot of people need to hear!
